1. HIGHLIGHTS:

  • JUNE, TWO MEMORABLE DAYS; GAUDÍ’S BIRTH AND PASSING AWAY

The month of June opens and closes Gaudí’s life cycle. The architect was born June 25th 1852, 9.30 AM in the Camp de Tarragona - we won’t enter the everlasting discussion between Reus or Riudoms-. Victim of a lamentable trafic accident, he died almost 74 years later, on June 10th 1926.

  • SCOOP: INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF ARCHITECTURE 2005

Under the name Gaudí, Modernism and Modernity and in collaboration with the Cátedra Gaudí of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, the Gaudí & Barcelona Club is organising an International Congress of Architecture for next March 2005.

The Congress will last one week and combine theory and practice. During two days there will be conferences and debates about architecture in the past and in the future; the other days will used for technical visits to the main edifices and constructions of Barcelona and its surrounding area.

The goal of the Congress Gaudí, Modernism and Modernity is offering an opportunity to know more and debate about Gaudinism and the latest architectonic urban trends.

We invite all our members, architects, construction engineers, building contractors, designers and everyone with a high regard for Gaudinism, to participate in this large-scale event which will be a real architecture festivity.

After being successful in the organization of exhibitions, courses and concourses, we have established a new goal. All the contacts made in different organisations and companies up until now have been positive and support the idea completely.

WE COUNT ON YOU FOR THE REALISATION OF THE CONGRESS.
Would you like to participate as a congresist?
Can you give us the addresses of people you know and who may be interested?
Do you know any possible sponsors?
We are looking forward to your ideas! Please, send us your opinion, suggestions and advice to news@gaudiclub.com

We are looking for volunteers for the promotion, organition and development of the event. Would you like to collaborate? In which way?
Please, write to us without hesitation.

  • Conchi lives in Madrid. During her last trip to Barcelona she visited the Pedrera and the Sagrada Familia and got enthusiastic about the progress of the Temple’s construction works.

  • Gloria Z. Segura shares with us her “small contribution to this great artistic world we can discover behind the work of master Gaudí”

5. YOUR FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION CAN HELP US.
HAVE YOU BECOME A PAYING MEMBER YET?

If you can, your fee as a paying member is FUNDAMENTAL for the development of our association and its goals.

If you can’t, please help us to find sponsors who finance our activities, so that we can continue and increase them.

6. DO YOU LIKE CINEMA?

We are looking for the movie “Antoni Gaudí, una visión inacabada”, a picture about the last 48 hours of the architect.

This movie, featuring José Luis López Vázquez, was directed by our member John Alaimo in 1960 y produced by Pedro and Juan Ballester. The record was shown for the first time in 1972 but has disappeared and nobody seems to have a copy, not even its own director. We would love to recover it in any format. Have you got it? Can you give us some advice about how and where to find it? Please, contact us: news@gaudiclub.com

13. CURIOSITIES

As Joan Bassegoda explained during the presentation of the II Gaudí Prizes of Poetry and Short Narrative in his conference about Gaudí and the Liceo [link], our beloved architect liked the couplet “El mosquito y la mujer”. The Gaudí & Barcelona Club has succeeded to find the text and music of this merengue. But we have no couplet singer yet to perform it. Can you help us to find her? We need your collaboration! Please give us some ideas: news@gaudiclub.com

Here you’ve got a small fragment of the song text:

“En mi cuarto se metió
un mosquito condenado.
Y toda la noche estuve
rascándome desvelado”
