A word from Gaudí...

“There are not so many polyhedron shapes neither erroneously called geometric shapes in Nature. Even flat shapes created by mankind -doors, tables, boards…- end up being defective through time."

1. HIGHLIGHTS:

  • NEW COCA OF SAN JUAN TO CELEBRATE THE MONTH OF GAUDÍ

153 rd ANNIVERSARY OF ANTONI GAUDÍ WITH COCA

According to the traditions, the association Gaudí & Barcelona Club invites all the architect's admirers to celebrate the anniversary of his birth with a coca, in the habit of Catalonia at the time of San Juan.

The architect was born at 9.30 AM on June 25 th in the Camp of Tarragona. Almost 74 years later, on June 10 th 1926 , he died victim of a terrible traffic accident.

This year we present a collection coca made of products from the Mediterranean tropical market of Gaudi's land of birth of Tarragona . It is made of aubergines, courgettes, onions and peppers. Do you want to read the receipt? Try it and let us know whether you liked it!

The tradition of the night festival of San Juan

The magic night of San Juan , the shortest night of the year, marks the beginning of the summer solstice. On this moment the sun, symbol of fertility and richness, is at its highest point and can be seen longer. According to the legends, it's Christmas in hell during that night and the witches go out and dance the unbridled “akelarre”. Today people still dance around the bonfires so as to purify and scare away bad luck. In Catalonia people traditionally eat cocas -tarts- either the salty collection coca with vegetables from the market or the sweet one made of fruit and pine nuts. Both are served with cava - Champaign- while the youngest organize the typical San Juan bonfires where they burn old junk gathered together from several houses and enjoy the roar of the firecrackers.

Domingo
Sugrañes Gras

In 1927 the Yearbook of the Association of Architects of Catalonia published a necrology of Antoni Gaudí written by his friend and collaborator architect Domingo Sugrañes Gras, who has been at his side until the last moment.

The text published in 1927 in the Yearbook of the Association of Architects of Catalonia is of high interest because its author knew Gaudí very well in his daily work. Sugrañes perfectly knew how to describe Gaudí's fundamental characteristic: his clairvoyance, his capacity for intuition and his indomitable energy, which imposed forms that were directly derived from Nature, understood as a divine creation. Many of the biographies and critical studies about Gaudí are based on the text of Sugrañes, so it is extremely interesting to recuperate this initial source of information about the architect.

5. GAUDINIAN AGENDA

  •   PRESENTATION OF THE NOVEL “REGRESO A GAUDI'S PLACE”

June 30 th 2005 : Presentation of the novel “Regreso a Gaudí's Place” by Ana María Férrin

This novel juggles with the genres and consists of twenty-nine chapters with human beings who relate part of their life. Famous people or unknown passers-by show themselves the way they are, their faces, their identity, allowing us to discover the future of a part of the city that attracts every year about three millions of visitors to its centre.

In Regreso a Gaudí's Place , sixth book by Ana Mª Férrin and her first novel, the writer joins two of her favourite topics; Antonio Gaudí and the urban chronic narrated from the street. The works of the author about the condal city have seen the light since 1985 in more than 200 reportages and a large series of conferences and presentations. Gaudí. De Piedra y Fuego and Gaudí. La Huella del Genio , are two of her previously published works.

9. CURIOSITIES

George Harrison and the Sagrada Familia

Rock stars have always had eccentric diligences and an obvious excess of confidence. Recently the Museu del Rock let us know that ex Beatle George Harrison asked that the construction of the Sagrada Familia would be finished on a postcard that he wrote 1975 to one of his friends in Barcelona. The Museum has incorporated the postcard to its permanent collection.

On the postcard, sent in January 1975, Harrison asks "Please, finish building Gaudi's cathedral". The text, also signed by the Beatle's ex-wife, Olivia de Arias, includes the Spanish sentence "Health, love and pesetas".
