1. HIGHLIGHTS:
THE NEW STADIUM OF FC BARCELONA INSPIRED BY GAUDÍ

The English architect Norman Foster, selected by the FC Barcelona board to redesign Camp Nou, has found his inspiration in the representative mosaics of the work of the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí to cover the exterior and the new covering of the stadium with the colours of FC Barcelona (blue and scarlet) and those of Catalonia (red and yellow). Its new image, which will adopt the shape of a wave, has been presented coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Camp Nou.

noucamp

The exterior of Camp Nou, as well the façade as a new covering that will protect all the seats, will be recovered with a structure of coloured panels that will form mosaics, inspired by Gaudí’s famous “trencadis”. It will create a visual effect of lights and reflections that transform during the day and at night. The panels will be connected to a cable network that will support the entire structure.

The president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, and the author of the Project of the new Camp Nou, Norman Foster, uncovered a scale model representing the new design of the stadium. Foster explained that he was inspired by Gaudí’s mosaics for the exterior and the new covering of Camp Nou. He manifested that this project is a great personal challenge and that it’s his purpose to convert Camp Nou into "the best football stadium of the world".

AFTER ALL; THE GAUDINIAN CHAPEL EN CHILE

aeac

According to the sources of Mr. Miguel Blavi Torres, president of the Agrupación de Empresarios de Ascendencia Catalana de Chile, Antonio Gaudí had a great friend in Chile, a Catalan priest who asked him to send him some plans to build a church in his beloved city of Rancagua. In those days this was missing in the entire country.

Gaudí’s reacted fast. He indicated that despite of all the work he had, he would send him a copy of the plans of a chapel. And so he did. The plans arrived but his friend got sick and some months later he died.

The plans have been kept for several decades, until a commission was created to build the anhelado dream of the priest.  But as always there are problems and this mission did not get the necessary support and quedó immobile for many years.

The issue was treated during a breakfast last month, in presence of a high member of the embassy of Spain in Chile, the president of the Centre Català, Sigfrido Grimau, the president of the Agrupacion de Empresarios de Ascendencia Catalana, Miguel Blavi and architect Federico Rutllant. They proponiendo as gestor a Miguel Blavi in order to sacar adelante this important task, which should be ready for the bicentenary of Chile.

According to the indications of Mr. Blavi himself, we will be kept informed about the progresses regarding the levantamiento of this Church in Rancagua, se vayan produciendo.

From here we les animamos to realize the project as soon as possible, offering our support and corporation. AMUNT i CRITS !!!

GAUDÍS CHARISM
The agile pen of Professor Bassegoda introduces us to the personality of Gaudí. It demystifies and completely destructs all the gossip and fallacies that several authors have written shamelessly about the Master without a scientifically demonstrable base. (In spanish)

2. THE SAGRADA FAMILIA THREATENED

PUBLICATIONS ABOUT THE AGRESSION

In this paragraph we will indicate all the references published in the press or other means about the threatening of the AVE tunnel under the Sagrada Familia.

We are recollecting all the news regarding the problem of the high velocity train that will cross the city passing by the Sagrada Familia and the Casa Milà, La Pedrera.  With one stroke of a pen, the government ironically would be responsible of the destination of two of the most emblematic monuments built by Gaudí which represent the city of Barcelona worldwide.
All the formalities, neighbourhood movements, complaints, leading articles and demonstrations about the imminent danger those monuments are exposed to, have not succeeded to restrain the blindness of the politicians who un one day decided to create a tunnel through the centre of Barcelona without thinking of the severe consequences this would have for the two emblematic monuments.

From here we stick on the request to divert the AVE from its current route as it can circulate on other perfectly marked and delimitated routes.

TIEMBLA SF

The Sagrada Familia trembles at the idea of the imminent Ave passing through its core….
Why hurting the stones, the monuments and the persons??
Why hurting the deepest sentiments of Barcelona?

Gaudi.... Gaudi... it is you we clamour for, please, create a miracle!!!

ARCHITECT TOYO ITO WARNS ABOUT THE TUNNEL

The Japanese architect Toyo Ito warned in a conference in the Sagrada Familia about the "risk" the AVE tunnel will suppose for the structure of the temple.

sagrada familia

In a visit realized to the expiatory temple in the company of the engineer who works with him, Mr. Mutsuro Sasaki, also from Japan, Ito assured that he personally would decline to build such a work. "As an architect I consider its better to avoid risks, if possible. It’s everybody’s opinion", Ito proclaimed.

In this sense, Ito said that "if it were an architectonic work built today and realized by an actual team of engineers, it would be much easier to check the danger and security involved".

The expiatory temple is being built “in several phases and it’s very difficult to check that the work will be really secure if the tunnel passes underneath it".

Therefore, Ito warned about the risks the perforation of the new tunnel and the "vibrations" provoked by the circulation of the trains will mean for the structure of the temple.

From his side, the engineer specialized in structures Mutsuro Sasaki declared that “more detailed” investigations are needed to concrete that "nothing will happen" if the tunnel will be built. This afternoon Ito and Sasaki will give a conference under the naves of the temple, to which more than 1.000 people have subscribed, especially architects.

"There’s a construction foreseen that weighs a lot, the Gloria façade; if the tunnel passes, it might collapse", said the Japanese architect.

In this sense, Ito demanded to do more investigations about the impact the construction of tunnel will have on the temple structure, and he affirmed: "if this tunnel has to pass, a more detailed investigation is necessary to confirm that nothing would happen". "This is a frank opinion from the point of view of a foreigner", the architect added.

Toyo Ito does never hide his fascination for Barcelona. In fact, today again he affirmed that he would choose the capital of Catalonian if he had to live in Barcelona. Besides, the Japanese architect considers that Gaudí is one of his references.  He visited the Sagrada Família during his honeymoon in 1971 and remained "impressed" from then on. "In those days I thought he had nothing to do with my style ", Ito said. He assured that each time he visited the temple he has the feeling that he’s “getting closer to Gaudí". "I will always belong to the modern architecture but Gaudí influences the spirit of my works more and more", he declared.

When he was asked whether he thought the works of the Sagrada Famíla should continue, Ito indicated that architecture should be "teamwork", and in this sense he assured: "I have no right to say whether the works have to be continued yes or no”, though he expressed his desire that the construction would progress more "little by little".

Sasaki expressed something similar; he as well considered that the works of the Sagrada Familia should be realised “slower" y that above all, the process should be "secure". "The style of the project should respect Gaudí, not only from a point of view of its forms but also in the way in which the efforts are distributed", he said.

POPULAR INICIATIVE IN DEFENSE OF THE MONUMENT

We are a group from El Masnou and we have decided that each Thursday 8:15 PM we will have an awareness meeting regarding the disconformities that the AVE would cross underneath Barcelona and more concretely underneath the Expiatory Temple. The concentration place is the plaza of the church in front of the Parrish San Pere.

With this purpose in mind,  Thursday  1st  of November almost a centenary of persons got together and read the following poem:

POEMS OF STONE

A Antoni Gaudí, poeta i arquitecte

i que ses obres exhalen poesia?
Missatge, llum d'expressió i harmonia

ni sols amb mots es compon la poesia;

"Poems of Stone. A Antoni Gaudí, poet and architect:

Have you never thought about Gaudí as a poet /and about his works exhaling poetry?/ Message, light expression and harmony/ it has always been his way to the goal./
Have you never seen vibrating a genius verso in a healthy structure,/ nor have you ever felt the rime songs in healthy harmony,/ or the rhythm of the expression in the tuning /of the materials, the colours, the architecture? /
Not every poem is only a fruit of words,/ not only words can create poetry; / images, feelings, delight, turn/ in other ways to express beauty. "

RECOURSE AGAINST THE ROUTE OF THE AVE
Last month of October the patronage board of the Sagrada Familia presented a recourse against the route of the AVE to the National Audience.

The patronage board claims to paralyse the construction of the tunnel which will connect the stations Sagrera and Sants. It considers that this work, which central trajectory hasn’t been started yet, would put in danger the structure of more than 800 buildings that are situated at only a few meters from the tunnel, many of them centenaries, such as the case of the Sagrada Familia or the Pedrera, works of Antonio Gaudí.

El Patronage board demands in its administrative litigious recourse “to carry out the legislation in force and to preserve the environment of the national monuments declared monuments of humanity". Given that the procedures of the recourse will take a long time, the Patronato de la Junta has requested to the Audience to adopt prudential measures and cancel the works whilst the recourse is being processed. In his opinion, this recourse «has many possibilities to prosper».

According to the last previsions of the Ministry of Public Works, the AVE will arrive at Sants next December 21st and the connection works with the Sagrera should start in the first months of next year.

The project includes a special fortification in the stretch of the tunnel that will pass under the Sagrada Familia, although the Patronage Board sustains on the basis of several technical reports that this measure doesn’t guarantee the «zero risk» for Gaudí’s most important work.

From her side, in a meeting celebrated yesterday night, the AVE platform through the Litoral decided that it will also present, within fifteen days, its own dispute to the Audience. They opinion that the selected route will pass at a depth situated under the freatic level (at about 28 meter), in a not very stable site, in which there haven’t been realised sufficient geological trials.

The spokesman of the platform, Pere Vallejo, has explained to Efe, that when one is “thinking over” the urban route of the AVE in order to avoid risks, the high velocity line could make use of the stretch of the large “mixed” railways, «approved by the Council of ministers», which is already being built in el Vallés, which means that the connection between Barcelona and the boarder of France would not be paralysed.

Politically Barcelona is also divided. The municipal team, consisting of the PSC and ICV-EUiA, is standing alone in the defence of the tunnel.  The opposition groups -CiU, PP y ERC-, supported the project when in 2002 the definitive agreement between the Ministry of Public Works, the Generalitat and the Municipal Council was signed, but have asked now to reconsider the work. So the three opposition groups, majority in the consistory, succeeded last month of July in a plenary to put through a motion to reject the current route, although they didn’t establish where this connection should go through, as each one of the parties offered its own alternatives.

Despite of this motion, the mayor of Barcelona, Jordi Hereu, considers that the route is already immovable, and that the tunnel is essential not only in order to carry out the terms of the works of the AVE between the Catalan capital and France, but also in order to duplicate the capacity of the Cercanías de Renfe, which on the contrary would collapse in the coming years.

El secretary of the State of Infrastructure, Víctor Morlán, has also been categorical about the necessity of the tunnel, which will manage «all the technical guarantees and offer transparency to the people of Barcelona».

OBITUARY SENT BY OUR MEMBERS FROM REUS

Obituary sent by Amics de Gaudí-Reus.

Last Monday October 8th in the Parrish Church of the Purísima Sangre, was celebrated the funeral for the soul of Mr D. Joan Oriol Baget, r.i.p., assiduous participant of our sessions and collector of programs, leaflets related to Reus and especially to the architect Antón Gaudí Cornet. Mr. D. Joan Oriol Baget granted his collection of funds to the association “Amics de Gaudí-Reus”, having been one of its founders, President during several years and General Coordinator. He has participated in the means of social communications with his comments, suggestions for local activities and constructive and healthy criticism.

More than thousand people together with their sons, nieces and other relatives said goodbye to Joan Oriol under the flag of the city of Reus
From the Association Gaudí Barcelona Club we send our condolence to all his relatives and friends. We are convicted that his work in favour of Gaudí will persist for ever.

The avenida Rivadavia al 2000 possesses a difficultly disputable exclusivity: separated by less than 20 meter, at 2009 and 2031 are situated two buildings which, between 1903 and 1907, were built by the Argentinean engineer Eduardo Rodríguez Ortega (1871-1938). They have been conceived in the art nouveau style with an influence of our famous Catalan architect Antonio Gaudí which isn’t observed in the same grade in other buildings in Buenos Aires.

a

Palacio de los Lirios, with matices of art nouveau and Gaudi’s work

Those characteristics are among the fundaments of various postulations to the Legislature to be declared national monuments.

Also dominating are the mosaics; the most remarkable – which at first sight seems to be a stained-glass window - is extended over the entire superior tramo. And upon it, the cornice in the shape of fish flakes, together with other shapes such as the god of the wind, Eolo) and monsters. The whole is also surrounded by cement flowers, which clearly transmits the gaudinian inspiration. Downstairs the iron and wooden craftwork of the main door is standing out as well. The interior walls until the third floor show a fine marble work.

a
The façade of Rivadavia 2031

The architect Fernando Lorenzi was in charge of remodellling the imponent dome, crown on the five floors of this other work of Rodríguez Ortega, whose extreme is a splendid iron weathercock. From the south corner, la mirada se queda allí ro, better, el asombro la hace quedar allí. The architect has no doubts: "Among the almost 400 domes in the city, this is one of the most beautiful".

The restructuration works started at the end of 1999 and have been extended during years. A particular discovery, in the very beginning of the works, was that Rodríguez Ortega had made use of “ferrocement” (reinforce concrete antecedent), adapted after his years at the European universities and until then used in the local constructions.

But it was the restoration of the dome-tempietto which demanded mayor efforts. The almost 100 years passed by had left important consequences on the whole, although the deterioration was not insurmountable, thanks to the nobility of the used materials. The labour wasn’t only a challenge for Lorenzi. It also granted him the experience that would convert him in one of the mayor experts in the recovery of domes in Buenos Aires.

The recuperation of this sector of the tower had the correct impulse of its proprietary, Carolina Rojo, who in 1999 acquired the last floor as well as the tempietto  in order to use is as an office and apartment.

The multicoloured dome on itself is a testimony of the influence of Gaudí. This influence would be even more accentuated thanks to the tribute to the great Catalan master of its admirer Carolina Rojo.

Lorenzi provided the 300 m2 wide terraces, with gaudinism; two remarkable iron balustrade structures at the sides, replicas in scale of the famous Dragon Puerta standing out in Palacio Güell, as well as ornaments that one can see in the Battló house in Barcelona.

MODERNISM OF MELILLA INSPIRES CATALAN STUDENTS

estudiantes catalanes

José Vallés and professor Gueilburt, together with the four Catalan students

For the third consecutive year four students of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia have travelled to Melilla with the mission to elaborate the plans of the fifteen modernist buildings designed by Enrique Nieto. They will present those plans later on as their project fin de carrera.

This is possible thanks to the re-edition, for the third year, of the agreement subscribed between the Foundation and the “Gaudí Workshop of the Escuela de Edificación of the UPC”. This agreement has allowed recuperating until now the plans of a total of thirty modernist buildings.  The re-edition of the agreement allows “recuperating the diagonal Melilla-Barcelona. And there is a link between modernism of Melilla and the capital of Catalonia”.

According to the responsible of the Foundation, the mentioned seminary “has each time more diffusion and prestige”, so it’s not even necessary anymore to publish it. It’s more, the director of the Gaudí Workshop, Luis Gueilburt, assured that this year the mouth-to-mouth has leaded that there has been made a selection among 12 candidates. “We had to make a selection and we have chosen 4 students who had already finished their career”.

Professor Luis Gueilburt applauded the renovation of the agreement and the fact that Melilla also works on the recuperation of its noble buildings, giving the opportunity to the foreigners “to learn from your rich patrimony”. In this case the Catalan students have the opportunity to know a almost autochthon modernism, different from the one of Gaudí, “a modernism from Melilla, distinct and rich”. At last he added that the agreement has no closing date and said that when the categorisation of the modernist buildings is finished, they will start with the Art Deco.

CASA VICENS, WORK OF GAUDI, ON SALE

a

Casa Vicens, de Gaudí

The British real estate agency Bective Leslie Marsh has put on sale the real estate jewel of family Herrero Jover, the building Casa Vicens, of great Antoni Gaudí, for 35 million euro. One of the first houses of the architect might have a new proprietary in the future, though one of the current proprietaries, Javier Herrero Jover, has denied the interest in selling the house. Nevertheless, the British company specialized in exclusive properties has the building in sale since august, though recognises that it will be difficult to sell the building of Gràcia to international investors.

And it is so that Bective Leslie Marsh is offering the Barcelonese building to a groups of international investors and that there already five interested parties; but they recognise that the work of Gaudí usually doesn’t convince the investors among the Spanish boarders interested in great architects because of his particular style.

A TOWN COUNCILLOR OF REUS REQUESTS TO MOVE THE SAGRADA FAMILIA

sfThe municipal group of the Coordinadora Reusenca Independent (CORI) remained alone today as for the vote of the municipal plenary of Reus to approve a motion that requests to move the Sagrada Família from the city 'in order to avoid its possible collapse because of the AVE works'.

All the groups voted against this motion grupos, which defended the removal because 'finally' Reus would have a monument of Gaudí. According to this municipal group this would be an attractive element to promote the city and to appeal tourists.

At the arrivals terminal of the Airport of Barcelona, since a while now, a monumental fotographe of “Casa Milá La Pedrera”, welcomes everbody who arrives at the city of Barcelona through the airport del Prat with a gaudinian welcome. We don’t know who has had the idea but we really congratulate that person.

from confident sources we know that the Amigos de Gaudí de Reus are negotiating with Aena to install an image of the great architect Antonio Gaudí Cornet or of the Espai Gaudí in the Terminal of the airport of Reus, so that the travellers know some of his works and feel like visiting them, as well as the modernism they can visit in Reus. A praiseworthy initiative which will offer a warm welcome to the those who recently arrive to our city.

AN ENTHUSIASTIC GAUDINIAN

Ana Mª Férrin is our member, friend and also collaborator. Her works about the count city have seen the light since 1985 in more than two hundred articles and a large number of conferences and presentations. The well-known author, whose three biographies about Antoni Gaudí can be acquired in the library of our Gaudí Club, will speak in various conferences about the musical atmosphere in the beginning of century XX in Barcelona. Those were the days when Antonio Gaudí used to be an assiduous of the musical circles and when the Portuguese violoncellist, Guillermina Suggía, often spent time in Barcelona in the house of Pau Casal as his first wife. The practically unknown but exciting biographical profile of Guillermina Suggía, has also been recovered by Ana Mª Férrin thanks to many years of investigation. It has been published in two parts in issue 367 and 368 of the magazine Historia16.

In Return a Gaudí’s Place, a long novel report with characters using their real name and image, the writer has had to the occasion to found two of her favourite subjects: Antonio Gaudí and the urban chronicle, narrated from a street point of view. We’d like to grant our friends of the club with the following synopsis of the twenty-four hours during action on and around plaza Gaudí:

RETURN A GAUDÍ’S PLACE

He lives the Sagrada Familia tightly fitted to it with a cord revolving around his existence twenty-four hours a day. Maga influences the life of her neighbours and admirers, believers or not, installing herself in the intimate essence of their souls.

Her mysticism transcends a concrete religion and the only things that matter are the spirit of the place and the admiration for architect Antonio Gaudí, who has succeeded to realise his dream and reached six generations until today, thanks to his culture of efforts.

Workers, merchants, artists, vagrants, architects and travellers pass by at Plaza Gaudí. From whichever point of the city its skyline is very well visible. But those who give in to her influx prefer to approach the square, feeling spiritually united in a dance of life between mixed races.

Witchcraft of returns, departures and decisions...

LOST MOVIE ABOUT GAUDI

We are looking for a copy of the movie "Antoni Gaudi, una vision inacabada" about the distinguished Architect Gaudi, filmed in 1972.

Any kind of format is useful to us.  We’ll send it to its producer John Alaimo, member of our club and now resident in the USA. Because of some strange economic distribution circumstances distribution, he doesn’t conserve any copy neither any of the official cinematographic files we have consulted. So it seems that this movie has got lost, without leaving a trace.

Maybe a friend or relative made a copy on video when it was emitted on television years ago. If you any idea, please contact us, because all the efforts we have realized during all those years up have been without success until today. Any help or clue to localize the movie is welcome.

ORIGINAL INICIATIVA MEDITERRANEA
