THE SPANISH GUITAR AND ROMANESQUE ART

The Spanish Guitar and the Romanesque Art is an already consolidated concert cycle that every summer gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy the guitar and its music in the setting of the two only remaining Romanesque churches in the city of Barcelona. Created and directed by Catalan guitarist Manuel González, the previous concert series were enthusiastically received by the Catalan audience and the visitors who seized the opportunity to know in situ two expressions of Catalan culture that have a well-deserved international reputation. It must be added that The Spanish Guitar and the Romanesque Art has been highly praised by many institutions and significant names of this country's politics and culture.

This year's cycle surpasses the previous ones in variety of ensembles and performers. The programs to be played include a wide range of works from the 16th to the 20th century. Catalan composers -as Soler, Sor, Albéniz and Granados- will be widely represented in the cycle, a fact that will highlight once again Catalonia's significant contribution to the concert guitar. The performers who will be heard in the cycle, all of them outstanding figures of our musical scene, are best examples of a unique playing style in which modern guitar technique joins a centuries-old heritage of instrumental tradition.

MONUMENTS

    Sant Pau del Camp Church

The Romanesque buildings preserved in the city of Barcelona are very few. The most important one is the church of Sant Pau del Camp, an old Benedictine monastery founded at the end of the 9th century by Guifré II. The church was possibly destroyed by the army of Almanzor in 985, and was rebuilt in Omanesque style between the 11th and the 12th centuries.

Sant Pere de les Puel·les Church

Another very notable building is the church of Sant Pere de les Puel·les. Riquilda, countess of Barcelona, founded it in the 9th century as a Benedictine nun convent. The first existing church was destroyed by Almansor, and rebuilt in the 12th century. The additions and changes that haver been carried out during the last centuries have not deprived the building of the charm of Romanesque architecture.

Antoni Gaudí's work is a synthesis of very different influences. Catholic religiosity, medieval architecture, Islamic art and the shapes found in nature are only some of the ingredients forming the very personal style of the Catalan architect. Under the title The Musical Landscapes of Gaudí, we want to remember through music some of the spaces that best represent those influences.
