A CHRONOLOGY

 
1866 Josep M Bocabella founded the Associación of Devotees of Saint Joseph, that will eventually promote the building of theTemple
.
1881 With the devotees contributions, the association purchases the terrain comprised between the Marina, Provença, Sardenya and Mallorca streets to build the Temple
.
1882 In the feast of Saint Joseph the foundation stone is laid and the building of the crypt starts, following the project of the architect Francesc de Paula del Villar
.
1883

Because of dissensions with the promoters, Francesc de Paula del Villar resigns and the Building Committee representative, Juan Martorell Montells, appoints Gaudí as the Temple architect

1889 Ending of the crypt works and beginning of of the apse building
.
1890 Gaudí plans the first overall solution for the Temple: basilical ground plan, five naved, with a three naved transept and a 170 m. high crossing tower, with a strong vertical accent
.
1892 The foundations of the Nativity Façade are laid and the construction of the cloister and the big northern transept window
.
1894 Ending of the apse shell wall
.
1899 Finishing of the Rosary Portal
.
1909 Building of the Parish School, an annexed building inside the church precinct
.
1917 Gaudí designs the Passion Façade, with the monument to bishop Torras i Bages
.
1923 In the Gaudí's workshop are elaborated the definitive nave and roof solutions, by means of 1/10 and 1/25 scale plaster models
.
1925 November, 30th the first belfry, devoted to Saint Barnabas is finished
.
1926 After the architect's death, on June 10th, rolled by a tramway, the works go on and in 1930, the three remaining belfries are finished
.
1936 In July, with the military rising and the Civil War outburst, some revolutionaries burn the crypt, the Parish School and the Gaudí's workshop, causing a great construction plans loss and part of the scale plaster models
.
1939 - 1940 The architect Francesc Quintana restores the burnt down crypt and the broken plaster models, by means of which, the Temple works go on nowadays
.
1954 The architects Quintana, Puig Boada y Bonet Garí, following Gaudí's designs, start the construction of the Passion Façade: foundations, walls and belfries
.
1977 Finishing of the four Passion Façade belfries pinnacles
.
1978 Starting of the nave outer walls
.
1986 Nave foundations
.
1990 First Josep M. Subirachs sculptures placed in the Passion Façade
.
1995 Construction of the aisle vaults
.
1998 Construction of the central nave vaults
.
2000 Ending of the central nave vaults

2001

Building of the four porphyry columns of the crossing

2002... Actually work progresses in the transept, so as to finish the crossing and apse vaults, covering thus, eventually, the whole Temple inner space, and then going on, afterwards, raising the four evangelist towers flanking the central one with its 170 m. high cross and, over the apse, the Virgin tower. Finally, the four Glory Façade belfries shall be finished
