The Gaudí exhibition at the Illa Diagonal drew 200.000 visitors in just one week

This event, organised by www.gaudiclub.con together with the Catedra Gaudi, will be on until August 22

Barcelona, 31st July 2002.
Thanks to its privileged location, just in the first week alone 150,000 people have visited the exhibition Catedra Gaudi, opened on 24th July. The said location is at Anglesola Square in the Illa Diagonal, a spot where thousands of passers-by walk through daily. The display of models, furniture and projects made by Gaudi, make up an ensemble of singular interest, which naturally captivate people's interest.

Professor Joan Bassegoda i Nonell, keeper of the Royal Gaudi Chair (Real Catedra), expresses his approval about the initiative: "The scarcity of original drawings signed by Gaudi confers historical and documentary interest upon this exhibition. Contrary to what happens with all the rest of expositions held this year, where visitors purposely have to go to, the Illa Diagonal exhibition is located just in people's way, spontaneously and directly offering the creative treasure and genius of the Baix Camp free of charge. It is a small exhibition, but the saying that pledges that good jam is found in small pots, is also well known".

The exposition reconstructs Gaudi's multifaceted creation, displaying models and plans of his most celebrated works - such as the Sagrada Familia, the Pedrera and the Perk Güell - as well as various other creations with different materials he too mastered, such as wood and ceramic.

Joan Bassegoda, Daniel Giralt-Miracle and Eduard Solé opened the exhibition last July 24. After an engaging presentation by the keeper of the Chair, the Commissioner to the Gaudi Year 2002 congratulated the "Gaudi i Barcelona Club" for this undertaking and for its commitment to divulge the architect's life and creative work, in which the Club is engaged since 1997.

Mr. Giralt-Miracle too stressed the ambition of furthering the approximation to Gaudi's art by bringing the exhibition to people instead of having people to go to exhibitions.

On the other hand, the president of the Club, Mr. Eduard Solé, remarked that the association, which works as an Internet site wholly dedicated to Gaudi and whose members amount to over 7,000 people, wanted to play a part in the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the architect's birth. It did so by means of a tribute the whole population of Barcelona can benefit from.
