  • Barcelona declares 2002 the Year of Gaudí
The commemoration, directed by Daniel Giralt-Miracle, celebrates the 150th anniversary of the architect's birth

    MFC, Barcelona.-

Barcelona has declared 2002 the International Year of Gaudí in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the architect-genius, creator of the Pedrera and Park Güell.

Exhibitions, symposiums, publications, itineraries and trips will make up the greater part of the commemoration, which follows the trend of previous, similar initiatives, such as the Year of Miró and the Year of Pla. The proposal, an initiative of the Ajuntament de Barcelona (Barcelona City Council), will be approved tomorrow by the city council. The commissioner of the Year of Gaudí will be Daniel Giralt-Miracle, the current director of the Gaudí Space in the Pedrera, in Barcelona.

The goal of this initiative is to "get the work of Gaudí to be even more renowned, visited, and studied, both nationally and internationally. In a certain way, the Year of Gaudí is also planned as a warm-up for the activities of the International Forum of Cultures, in 2004.

The Year of Gaudí project is still in the beginning. It will be developed by the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona (Barcelona Cultural Institute), pending definitive approval by the city council, but, as Giralt-Miracle confirmed to Avui, the concept is for there to be two large exhibitions, and for "something to happen" at every focus of Gaudí in the city.

As with similar initiatives, other institutions, universities, organizations, associations, professional boards, businesses and public personalities are invited to participate in this commemoration, particularly those that are related to the architect's work.

The Year of Gaudí will be the culmination of the recent resurgence in appreciation for Gaudí's work, and for architectural Modernism in general, especially since the Olympic Games. Lately, university study of the architect has also increased, including the calculations of structures built by Gaudí that are being carried out by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Polytechnic University of Catalonia).

Restorations of works by Gaudí, such as the Casa Batlló, Park Güell and the Pedrera, have been carried out over the past 10 years.
